Synthesis of a Drug

Synopsis
Describes how a drug that is in common use in the treatment of arthritis and as a pain-killer was discovered while searching for an alternative to aspirin and the corticosteroids. Shows that the synthesis of some drugs such as aspirin is simple enough to be included in undergraduate practical sessions. Describes the development of the drug ibuprofen. Retrosynthetic analysis can be used to design a synthetic route to produce ibuprofen. Discusses the factors that influence the choice of synthetic route used in the commercial production of a drug.
