Sundanese Culture Alive

Alternative title
Sundanese Popular Culture Alive
Synopsis
Shows the richness of Sundanese art, concentrating on the performing arts, particularly on the place of Jaipongan, a new style of music and dancing invented around 1978 on Western Java. The roots of Jaipongan are explained through examples of traditional music and dance genres. Drawing on more classical Javanese music and taking elements from Japanese and Indian music as well, Jaipongan has become widely popular. Dancers and musicians explain the place of Jaipongan within Sundanese culture. Also shows several west-Javanese folk arts, including Doger folk music and dance, which have disappeared almost entirely.
