Suicide: Epidemiological and Social Aspects

Synopsis
After a brief review of the sources of data on suicide, a summary is presented of the major epidemiological findings regarding age, sex, marital status and regional variation within the UK. The role of social changes and of social stress is illustrated by the secular trends since 1900. Social integration and isolation might be key factors influencing suicide rates, a hypothesis capable of being tested by data on migration, religious communities and single person households. The demographic relation between suicide and parasuicide is also considered.
