Sts-59: Mission Highlights

Synopsis
Space shuttle mission STS-59, and it experiment SRL-1, the first flight of the Space Radar Laboratory. To study the earth’s surface with this instrument package, ‘Endeavour’ was required to make more than 400 separate position manoeuvres to achieve the zero Doppler steering necessary for th ground track and orbiter alignments essential to secure radar aperture synthesis of mapping the surface and geology of the earth. Other important tasks included tests of a new form of video-microscope capable of studying biological processes such as cell growth and movement, under zero-gravity conditions. Pollution studies included mapping the global and local distributions of carbon dioxide important in the study of ecology and the ecosphere.
