Strand: Under the Dark Cloth
- Synopsis
- A film biography of Paul Strand, a leading figure in the history of American photography, who also worked as a newsreel cameraman. He created a direct, dynamic style of modern photography and was one of the first American artists to fully understand Cubism, translating its vocabulary to the medium of photography. He also broke new ground with candid portraits and extreme close-up of nature. His growing political commitment led him to continue to use film-making as a means of political expression during the 1930s. This film includes footage of Strand’s family, artistic collaborators and peers, including Georgia O’Keefe, Leo Hurwitz, Hazel Strand, Caesare Zavattini and Fred Zinnemann.
