Story of Fashion, The (3 Parts)

Synopsis
Traces the history of fashion in the 20th century through its creators and those whose business it is to interpret it - illustrators, writers and photographers - as well as models, media stars and ordinary people.
1: Looks at the roots of 20th-century fashion, particularly at the life and work of Charles Worth, the Englishman who invented ‘haute couture’. Tells the story of the tea gown, the first 20th-century costume to be worn without underpinnings. Features Paul Pioret, Fortmny, Bakst’s costumes for the Ballet Russe, and Coco Chanel. Hair is noted, from Antoines’ first bobs to contemporary multi-coloured hair.
2: Looks at fashion from the 1920s to the 1950s, from Delaunay’s abstract fabric designs and Hollywood fashion, to Elsa Schiaparelli in the 1930s, the liberating effect of the uniform in wartime, and Dior’s ‘new look’ in 1949.
3: Fashion since the 1940s, with the rise of ready-to-wear and the growth of fashion as a huge international business. With contributions from Jean Muir, Giorgio Armani, Donna Karan, Hubert de Givenchy, Thierry Mugler and Jasper Conran.
