Stonecarving

Synopsis
Follows the creation of a work by Peter Randall-Page commissioned by Hampshire County Council in 1988 for the Chineham Shopping Centre at Basingstoke, which was to commemorate the European Year of the Environment. Randall-Page describes the techniques he uses and how the stone is quarried, transported and delivered to his studio. Shows the moving and positioning of the stone, how it is roughed out with a variety of hand and power tools. Randall-Page explains how he finds the form within the stone, scales up from the maquette and, using the angle grinder, punches and points, hammers, claw-tools and pneumatic tools he develops the work. He finally refines the form and polishes the surface. He relates his thoughts on stone and reviews some of his work.
