Stephen Hawking’s Universe

Synopsis
Series of six programmes in which Professor Stephen Hawking considers topics in cosmology.
1: Explores mathematics and how it revolutionised our view of the universe. Covers Ptolemy’s theory of the motion of the planets, moon and sun; Newton’s picture of the universe with everything governed by gravity; Einstein’s revolutionised theory of physics; Edwin Hubble’s invention of the telescope that saw the expansion of the universe. Combined on one tape with THE BIG BANG.
2: Scientists developed two theories to explain how the unvierse began: the Big Bang and the Steady State theories. Science has now come to understand the universe began from a tiny point. Combined on one tape with SEEING IS BELIEVING.
3: Over the past century a series of discoveries have shed light on our understanding of matter. This episode covers the basics - fire, water, air and gas - in addition to more complex findings of elements and matter, from the creation of the Periodic Table to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Combined on one tape with ON THE DARK SIDE.
4: Vera Rubin proposed the idea that the space betwen the stars was filled by invisible stuff she called dark matter. Scientists now believe that the dark matter could make up 99% of the universe and are trying hard to find it. Combined on one tape with COSMIC ALCHEMY.
5: The invention of radio astronomy has led to astronomical discoveries like black holes. Discusses why black holes continuous remain a lesson to scientists. Combined on one tape with AN ANSWER TO EVERYTHING.
6: Over the last hundred years our understanding of the universe has advanced further than in previous centuries. We now know the universe had a beginning and how all the matter was formed but there is still one outstanding question - how did the Big Bang begin? Stephen Hawking is joined by other leading scientists as they try to answer this question. Combined on one tape with BLACK HOLES AND BEYOND.
