Stem Nematode, The: A Pest in Agriculture

Synopsis
The stem nematode ‘Ditylenchus dipsaci’ causes serious yield losses in temperate regions. Being resistant to drought it is often distributed on seed. Control with chemicals is expensive, but the use of resistant crop varieties or long rotations with non-host crops are effective alternatives. The film shows the effects of stem nematode attack on field beans, oats and onions; and, with high-power cinemicrography and explanatory animated diagrams, how the nematode lives and feeds within host tissues and affects the cell fed upon. The nematode punctures the plant cell with its tubular mouth spear, salivates and is then force-fed for a time. It prolongs the feed by pumping with its oesophagus. Food cells may recover or die. Damage by individual nematodes is slight, but enormous populations develop quickly with devastating results.
