- Synopsis
- Recordings of contemporary dance performances from the 1996 Spring Loaded season held at The Place, London. The two-camera live-mix version does not interpret the work but does capture the spontaneity of live performance. Each tape includes an interview with the choreographer.
1: Under recently appointed artistic director Neville Campbell, Scotland’s only full-time contemporary dance company presents three contrasting pieces under the title ‘Human Tales (...Rwanda, Quartet, and Loveless and Unsung), characterised by muscular, athletic and elegant movement. Includes an interview with Neville Campbell.
2: ‘Reel Luck’ and ‘Straight with Curves’ comprises a dance comedy double-bill from a Dublin-based company that has used Ireland’s cultural wealth of literature, music and dance to develop a unique performance style. Includes an interview with artistic director David Bolger.
3: ‘Sheer’ comprises two powerful but contrasting performances from the Ricochet Dance Company: Wayne McGregor’s ‘Urban savage’ and Javier de Frutos’ ‘E Muoio Disperato’. Includes interviews with McGregor and de Frutos.
4: ‘Homage, Lash, Mirrors’ and ‘Vespri’ are new workw by Mark Baldwin, one of the most fluent, quizzical and musical choreographers currently working in British dance. Includes an interview with Baldwin.
5: ‘Cyborg’ and ‘Jacob’s Membrame’ formed part of the ‘Urgent’ programme. ‘Cyborg’ is a solo by Wayne McGregor, and ‘Jacob’s Membrane’ is a sextet performed to a specially commissioned saxophone and voice score by Graham Fitkin. Includes an interview with McGregor.
6: ‘Sweet Boys (& Sweet Boy)' is an examination of the male as an object of desire and fascination, from a woman’s perspective. The solo ‘Sweet Boy’is included to illustrate the process involved in creating this piece and is referred to in the accompanying interview with Claire Russ.
7: ‘Rung’ is a production by the UK’s leading Kathak dance company, about the life and works of 12th-century Sufi saint, poet, scholar and musicologist, Hazrat Amir Khusrau. Includes an interview with Nahid Siddiqui.
