Spirit of an Age

Synopsis
Designed to accompany the exhibition ‘Spirit of an age: nineteenth-century paintings from the Nationalgalerie, Berlin’ the video looks at the setting of the Nationalgalerie and examines some of the forces underpinning German art at this time, as artists like Friedrich and Schinkel attempted to define a new 19th century spirit of German nationhood. During this period a yearning for Renaissance Italy was also a powerful force in German art, notably among the so-called Nazarenes, and in the paintings of Anselm, Feuerbach and Arnold Böcklin. The Berliner Adolph Menzel was an outstanding contributor to the Realist movement of the mid-nineteenth century and his greatest works are discussed.
