Spain in the Golden Age: Still Life

Synopsis
Traces the tradition of 16th-century Spanish still life painting from its origins in the work of Juan Sánchez Cotán (1560-1627) to Goya at the beginning of the 19th century. Shows some of the central concerns of European painting in the imitation of natural appearances in the displays of food and flowers; the virtuoso depiction of precious glass, wooden sweet boxes and glazed oil jars; and the ‘vanitas’ pictures, in which the skull and hourglass remind us of the brevity of worldly life.
