- Synopsis
- Programmes compiled from NASA footage, each introduced by a well-known American astronaut. Each tape contains two programmes.
FRIENDSHIP SEVEN: The story of the ‘Freedom 7’, America’s first manned space flight, which saw Alan Shepard as America’s first man in space. FREEDOM SEVEN: Looks at the Mercury programme and the ‘Friendship 7’ mission and and John Glenn as the first American to orbit the earth. (These 2 titles are also available in a separate video compilation entitled NASA - THE BIG MISSIONS).
SKYLAB THE FIRST 40 DAYS: Excessive heating and low power supply problems; astronauts had to perform deep-water manoeuvres to practice the repair. SKYLAB SECOND MANNED MISSION: a repair mission making way for Skylab 3’s scientific experiments. Human and animal physiological experiments; shots of the sun; information about the earth.
THIS IS HOUSTON FLIGHT: Shows testing and training for space missions, the ‘Gemini 8’ achievement of the first docking with an unmanned spaceship and the problems with the mission. THE EAGLE HAS LANDED: The ‘Apollo 11’ mission with Neil Armstron’s moon walk in 1969 and the excitement on earth following.
FOUR ROOMS EARTH VIEW: The Skylab project and its findings: experiments in zero gravity, solar observations and environmental resources. HOUSTON I THINK WE’VE GOT A PROBLEM: footage of the ‘Apollo 13’ mission and its problems.
IN THE MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON: Apollo 15, the first of three missions sent to investigate the moon. Shows the standup spacewalk, the lunar rover and the launching of a sub-satellite. MISSION APOLLO SOYUZ: The Soviet-American Space Agreement led to the Apollo-Soyuz mission in which two spaceships left different ends of the earth and met 140 miles above Portugal in the first phase of joint outer-space explorations.
NOTHING SO HIDDEN: Views of the lunar surface, of the earth from the moon. Shows the astronauts exploring on foot and using the lunar rover over highland regions near the crater Descarts. Shows a space walk. ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS: The last of the Apollo missions. Shows views of earth from space and the surface of the moon.
SPACE SHUTTLES: The story of the first reusable, fixed-wing spacecraft to go into orbit. HOUSTON I THINK WE’VE GOT A SATELLITE: Attempts to capture and repair the Intelsat satellite and the potential for satellites and weather tracking and communications.
OPENING NEW FRONTIERS: The space shuttles: the Orbital Flight Test Programming, showing the planning and pre-testing of shuttle equipment. WE DELIVER: The first woman in space, the first Afro-American astronaut, the first space walk using a new spacesuit design and portable life support pack. Shows the space shuttle in orbit and the development of two communication satellites. - Language
