Synopsis
A series investigating the universe using video recordings taken from space. Filmed by astronaut Claude Nicollier, with contributions from scientists and experts at the European Space Agency.
1: Images of the Eagle nebula, in the constellation of Serpens, 7000 light years away, as viewed by the Hubble space telescope and pictures from the space probes ‘Ulysses’ and ‘SOHO’, whic circle the sun.
2: Satellite weather forecasting and how it is changing our lives.
3: The Pyramids of Elysium on Mars and comets, includes the ‘Giotto’ space probe’s pictures of Halley’s comet, which passed near the earth in 1986.
4: Astronauts and their training. Tells the story of European astronaut Thomas Reiter, who set out for the Mir space station in 1995, was stranded in space and was sent on two spacewalks to undertake essential repairs to the space station.
5: The story of the Ariane rocket, which was responsible for launching commercial satellites.
6: Everyday applications of space technology, from Teflon to new designs for tennis racquets, to life-saving technology for newborn infants, to the satellite television industry.
