Soviet Art
- Synopsis
- Discusses official art in the Soviet Union; its organisation, its role in society and its history since the time of the experimental and subsequently repudiated period of the early 1920s. Dissident movements are also covered: the way some artists have been tolerated by the state while others live a dangerous life. Examines the training the artists receive where questions of individual vision, experimentation and formalist or abstract art have no place; yet within these constraints certain popular artists convey inner spiritual qualities through the dominant style of social realism.
