South-Eastern Nuba, The

Synopsis
The Nuba live in a remote part of Africa near the centre of the Sudan - a predominantly Muslim country. They have a flamboyant culture and a tradition of body painting unequalled anywhere in the world. The Nuba’s traditional way of life suffered when Leni Riefenstahl published a book about them in 1975. The subsequent influx of tourists who came in search of the people she described as ‘savage and passionate’ has reduced the young men to little more than male models, gradually forgetting the traditional dictates of form and colour in Nuba art.
