Sound on Film II
- Synopsis
- Series in which a composer and a director collaborate to devise and make an original music work for television.
1 (director: John Smith; composer: Jocelyn Pook) The building of the M11 link road in east London provoked a long and bitter campaign by local residents to protect their homes from demolition. Filmed while the houses were being torn down, music and images are woven into an elegaic evocation of memory and loss.
2 (director: Margaret Williams; composer: Judith Weir): Left at the mercy of a wicked step-mother and two ugly sisters, a young woman uses the powers of her magic doll to sort out her tormenters.
3 (director: Mike Stubbs; composer: Ulf Langhenirich): Against the background of the post-industrial lunar landscape of the Wolfen-Bitterfield district of former East Germany, hypnotic electronic music is constructed and mixed from the industrial sounds recorded on location.
4 (director: Phil Mulloy; composer: Alex Balenscu): An animated film based on the reminiscences of composer and musician Alex Balenscu. Subject to a rigid set of rules in Romania, the composer, believing he has escaped from this in New York, soon finds conformity of a different nature.
5 (director: Terry Braun; composer: Django Bates): Follows a day in the lives of a young composer and her daughter. Chance events influence her musical activities and these in turn inform her choice of numbers for a National Lottery entry. Will she be lucky?
6 (director: Peter Mumford; composer: Andy Shephard): A boy dreams of playing the saxophone in a jazz band while practicing the clarinet. When his supervising mother leave the house the the boy’s dreams manifest themselves: musicians invade the house and the music spills into the street. - Series
