Song of the Shirt, The

Synopsis
An investigation into the position of working women in the 1840s, the effects of protectionist philanthropy and the resistance to it. Deals with a group of women working in the new ‘sweated’ clothes trade in London and examines their plight through contemporary texts, archival material and acted reconstructions. Note: The film can be shown as three separate films with a 15-minute postscript but it is recommended that it be screened as one programme.
