Synopsis

J Salthouse presents an entertaining lecture on the production of sound, light and heat in oxidation reactions. He covers combustion, including chain reactions and explosions, and considers the properties of oxidants. The range covers some very rapid oxidations with liquid oxygen, and slightly more controlled oxidation with solid oxidising reagents. Demonstrates the multiplicity of oxidation states with vanadium, and chemiluminescence with luminol.
