Sofia and Her People

Alternative title
Sofia’s People: Eventful Lives
Synopsis
Shows a Greek family from the village of Argaki, Cyprus, at three points in their lives. In the ‘ethnographic present’ of Nicosia, 1983, when they operate a successful family business, a bakery that produces several thousand loaves a day; in 1973, when they were resident in Argaki, and Sophia, the mother and leading character, had a much smaller bakery. The third period involves the family becoming war refugees, and passing through a period of depression and apathy. Although economically resilient the family members pay a high price for recovery, in the stresses and strains of shift work. Particularly Sophia, who expresses her painful attachment to her lost village through improvised poems which she sings as laments while she works. Sophia’s lament provides a narrative framework for the film.
