Social Primates

Synopsis
Aims to develop students’ skills in the observation of social behaviour by looking at examples of conflict and co-operation that arise from group living.
1: Focuses on the social behaviour of rhesus monkeys as recorded at the Wild Animal Kingdom at Woburn. By following a chosen individual, called the focal animal, and observing its interactions with other monkeys, it is possible to see how the animals signal their status to each another. This social ranking, or dominance, helps to predict the most likely outcome in any competition for resources.
2: Asks whether the methods developed for looking at animal behaviour can be usefully applied to human behaviour. This section follows the research methods of Dr Michael Boulton, University of Sheffield, who has been following play in school children.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
