Slade Women

Synopsis
Germaine Greer continues the investigation undertaken in her book ‘The Obstacle Race’ into the ‘absent history’ of women artists, and follows the careers of six women artists, contemporaries of Augustus John, at the Slade School of Fine Art in the 1890s. Ida Nettleship, Gwen John, Edna Waugh, Gwendolyn Salmond, Ursula Tyrwhitt and Ethel Walker were, according to Augustus John, the outstanding students of their generation, yet only Gwen John is known today. Germaine Greer attempts to discover what stopped them from becoming great artists.
