Site One: Holy Loch

Synopsis
Examines the activites of the US Navy during the 24 years that American nuclear submarines have been stationed at Holy Loch on the Firth of Clyde. Sets out the strategic and diplomatic origins of the US Navy base, and investigates the way in which serious accidents involving radioactivity have either been played down or covered up. This has generated an atmosphere of distrust in the local communities and raised anxiety over the possibility of spillage of radiation into the loch. The programme pursues the theme of freedom of information at both local and national level and also examines the ‘special relationship’ between UK and the United States which made the Holy Loch base possible in the first place and shows how national security is often invoked where the real interests are of political and diplomatic kind.
