Simulations of Pharmacological Experiments on the Rabbit Jejunum
- Synopsis
- A teaching package reviewing the autonomic nervous system and its specific activity in the rabbit jejunum. Explains the significance of using rabbit jejunum tissue, outlines the equipment and techniques used, and explains the differences between rabbit jejunum and guinea pig ileum. Considers the classification and mechanism of action of the sympathetic and parasympathetic receptors together with other receptor types found in the jejunum such as histamine, 5-HT and adenosine. Provides a range of agonists and antagonists which permit the student to construct dose response curves which demonstrate the relative affinity of adrenergic agonists for specific adrenoceptors. Explores the use of specific agonists and antagonists to differentiate between muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. Demonstrates the activies of histamine, 5-HT and adenosine in the jejunum. Suitable for self-paced open-learning or as part of a lecture course. Approximately 3 hours of teaching material.
