Shirley Strum and the Pumphouse Gang
- Synopsis
- Describes the studies of the American anthropologist Shirley Strum who, over a period of six years, observed a troop of baboons who live in Gilgil in the Rift Valley of Kenya. The ‘Pumphouse Gang’ is shown feeding, walking, quarrelling, courting and rearing its young. Encounters with other troops are shown to have great social and biological significance. Feeding expeditions, hunting techniques, the role of the senior matriarch and the importance of grooming and play in reinforcing family ties are observed.
