Being White

Synopsis
Few white people whatever their cultural background describe themselves as being white, but take for granted both their skin colour and the advantages it brings in a society which has defined ‘normal’ as being white. A group of people talk about what is means to be white, from the different perspectives of being Irish, Jewish and working class. Looks at some of the images of a colonising white culture which reinforce racial stereotypes. Examines the history which supports and perpetuates that culture - from the missionary zeal of the Catholic Church and the days of Britain’s colonial past, to present day glorification of that heritage by press and politicians to stir up patriotic fervour.*
