Seurat and the ‘Bathers’

Synopsis
Looks in detail at Seurat’s ‘Bathers at Asnières’, considering its radical nature as an image of men, painted in a monumental and heroic way; its initial reception, and its place in Seurat’s later work. Includes many images of Seurat’s later paintings and considers the artist’s relationship with Impressionism, his development of the new technique of pointillism and his position in the Paris art world of the later 1880s. Shows footage of the actual site depiected in the painting and juxtaposes the ‘Bathers’ with Seurat’s next great picture showing the island in the middle of the Seine, the ‘Grande Jatte’.
