Sequences

Synopsis
Discusses ways in which a sequence of items can be stored in a computer. One is to use a data structure such as an array, and to sort the elements. This is acceptable for sequences which do not change very much, but if new entries have to be added to the list, they have to be inserted in the correct place. Then all the subsequent elements of the array have to be moved down by one. An alternative, the linked list, does not require data items to be stored in adjacent locations in the computer’s memory. Instead, each item ‘points’ to the location of the next. Computer animation sequences demonstrate how the linked list representation can be used to store sequences, how such a list can be searched, and how a new item can be inserted into the list.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
