Separations and Reunions (4 Parts)

Synopsis
Studies of children separated from their parents during periods of hospitalisation, and the children’s idiosyncratic reactions to reunion. Made at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
Part 1: Susan (17 months) is in hospital for an operation on her palate. Mother visited initially and later stayed until child’s discharge. At reunion: anger and reproach.
Part 2: Robert (20 months) fell ill when his mother was about to have another baby. Father visited. At reunion Robert is unable to meet his mother’s gaze.
Vanessa (14 months) is in hospital with gastro-enteritis. Classical fretting during a brief separation. Strength of mother-child bond vividly shown.
Alicia (15 months) is in hospital for five weeks with coeliac disease. The child lives out rather than buries her emotions during and after each visit. The mother accommodates the strain. No after-effects reported.
