Seeds of Change

Synopsis

Looks at solutions for the crisis in agriculture that is affecting north-east Brazil, where rain forests have been destroyed, slash-and-burn farming practices have degraded soil structures, and drought leads to farmers’ quitting the land. Plantas do Nordeste (PNE) is a scientific initiative in collaboration with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, which is attempting to reverse the trend. A new information centre in Recife aims to disseminate valuable agricultural and other information and put it within the grasp of the farmers.
