Searching Scientific Literature

Synopsis
Introduces new postgraduate science students to the facilities and resources of local and national libraries and databases. A scientific literature search should give a comprehensive survey of the work already done in a given field and a framework on which to build one’s own research, and the programme discusses the successive steps required. Advises on the use of general bibliographies, subject catalogues and review journals and on the use of abstracting journals. Discusses different types of index, current awareness services, the location and use of patent literature, conference proceedings, cartographic information, translation services, audio-visual materials, inter-library loan systems and the procedures for computerised bibliographic searches, both national and international.
