Seaport, The
- Synopsis
- Follows the history of seaports from Roman times to the present. Great ports such as Southampton arose in the Middle Ages. As Atlantic trade developed after the discovery of the Americas, the western ports of Bristol and Liverpool rivalled London in trade and importance. In the 19th century, London was consolidated as the greatest port in the world, with vast docks dug to the sides of the river by human labour. Recently, container traffic has revolutionised sea trade and a number of smaller ports are experiencing a renewal of prosperity.*
