Screening for Congenital Dislocation of the Hip

Synopsis
Congenital dislocation of the hip occurs in 15 children in every 1,000 live births. If identified within the first month, then by simply splinting the babies hip in abduction, the dislocation can be corrected and lifelong problems avoided. In 1986 a government-backed committee produced a booklet outlining the procedures which need to be carried out in relation to every child born in this country. A practical demonstration of the procedure is given which should be used in conjunction with the booklet. Mr Michael Benson of the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital, Oxford, shows what happens when a hip is dislocated and demonstrates the correct screening techniques which need to be performed at various ages beginning at birth.
