Synopsis
Follows the evolution of the self-portrait artist from being the invisible figure behind the canvas to the actual subject of the painting. Makes unexpected connections between old and new, describes some favourite self-portraits, and suggests reasons why artists hid behind guises and looking at the difference between introspective and extrovert portraits. Classic painters include Dürer, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Stubbs and Hogarth, while modern artists are represented by Mark Quinn, Gilbert and George and performance artist Orlan.
