Behaviour of ‘Heterodera’ Species Through the Life Cycle
- Synopsis
- A field crop of potatoes stunted by attack from ‘Heterodera rostochiensis’ (now Globodera) exemplified the economic importance of this group of nematode pests. By means of high-power cinemicrography, larvae are shown penetrating roots of host plants, cutting a passage through cortical cells and in association with syncytial food cells which form in the plant in response to the nematodes’ saliva. Feeding and the action of the oesophageal pump are shown. The development of a vermiform male is shown in detail by time-lapse and the way he is attracted to the globular female. Females each produce about 300 eggs which hatch en masse only in response to secretions from host-plant roots. The behaviour of larvae within the eggs which leads to hatching is shown in detail at the highest powers of the light microscope.
