Scaling the Salt Barrier

Synopsis
Atlantic salmon migrate between freshwater and the sea at least twice during their lives: once as young smolts migrating down to the sea, and again as adults returning to the Scottish rivers to spawn. This programme looks at the physiological adaptations the salmon make during their remarkable migrations. Demonstrates the methods for tagging fish in the wild, with different procedures being used for the smolts and the adult salmon. Examines the physiological adjustments of the adult to fresh water and of smolts to the sea. Water balance can be studied by rates of drinking and urine flow, while salt balance is measured from the levels of sodium and chloride in the blood. Explains the role of both kidney and gills, particularly the chloride cells.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
