Synopsis
Series broadcast in six parts tracing the history of the Papacy from the early days of Christianity to the to the modern Roman Catholic Church and Pope John Paul II. Narrated by Dr Anthony Clare. In 3 volumes: 1) explores the collapse of the Christian church in Jerusalem and the emergence of Rome as its new centre. Also examines the developing role of the Papacy as a religious and political force during the conversion of Europe to Christianity; 2) follows the forces of reform in the Western church from the 10th century onwards and the conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor, setting the scene for the Inquisition and the Crusades. Examines how under such figures such as Pope Alexander Borgia the Chruch simultaneously reached a pinnacle of cultural greatness and a pit of spiritual degradation; 3) the modern era, ushered in by the French Revolution, and a new series of challenges for the Popes. Reviews the challenges facing the Papacy in the new millennium.
