S330 Videocassette 1
- Synopsis
- Eight bands for interactive study.
1: Laboratory demonstrations simulate processes occurring within the ocean.
2: Data compiled from long-term infra-red measurements (AVHRR) of surface ocean temperatures recorded by polar orbiting NOAA satellites is combined with other atmospheric and geographical information to create a continuous synoptic view of sea surface temperatures (SST).
3: A laboratory demonstration showing how droplets of very saline water sink beneath ice forming at the sea surface (salt rejection).
4: Demonstration of the use of a trawled plankton net, which allows the sampling of the diverse community of microscopic animals, plants, eggs and larvae that are found at different depths in the sea.
5: Shows large and small tidal excursions (spring and neap tides) and the rich benthic community of animals that graze on seaweed or detritus on the sea bed.
6: A laboratory demonstration of the basic characteristics of waves in a fluid: rotary motion, wavelength, amplitude and energy. Shows the formation of a wave group when two waves of nearly the same frequency are added together.
7: The story of an investigation of ‘dispersion’ across an ocean: waves generated by a single storm in the Southern Ocean south of New Zealand in 1963 were monitored as they travelled across the Pacific to end up on an Alaskan beach.
8: Discusses how physical proceses such as ocean tides influence the movement of river water and sediments at different places in the estuary, and investigates some of the burrowing organisms that live in the sand banks. - Series

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
