Before Hindsight

Synopsis
An examination of the attitudes expressed by the non-fiction British cinema of the 1930s towards the events that led to World War 2, based on research into all the available material for the years 1931-1939 from the newsreel archives of British Movietone, Gaumont British, Pathé, Paramount and Universal; also the archives of the Socialist Film Council and the left-wing Film and Photo League; and the ‘March of Time’ series. Movietone commentator Leslie Mitchell explains that newsreels were then regarded as innocuous programme fillers; James Cameron comments on the reluctance of the newsreel to alert the public to the dangers of Fascism.
