Before Babel

Synopsis
Is it possible that all human languages share a common ancestor? Since William Jones discovered the link between English and Sanskrit in 1783, the existence of a group of languages known as Indo-European has been established. Now there is a major research project involving linguists, geneticists, palaeontologists and archaeologists trying to reconstruct a ‘mother tongue’ from which all of the 5000 languages currently spoken is descended.
