Rouch in Reverse

Synopsis
A tribute to Jean Rouch’s importance to anthropology and to film history, but uses his ‘shared anthropology’ method to show the ambiguity of anthropology in the formation of African identity. Rouch played a key role in the representation of Africans on film and is known for speaking for Africans and defending their cultures against Eurocentric racism. But this film reveals the film-maker’s belief that Rouch’s work for Africa can be faulted for disenabling Africans from speaking for themselves with equal authority.
