- In a programme made shortly before his death, Robert Motherwell, one of the chief protagonists of the New York school, this film recalls the ‘heroic age’ of American abstract expressionism, tracing the struggle of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and others to establish New York as the world centre of modern art. Filmed on location at the Guggenheim and Metropolitan museums in New York.
