Rise of Nationalism, The

Synopsis
Looks at the major independence struggles, opening with the situation in the Gold Coast and the initiative of the nationalist leader Kwame Nkrumah. Through archive film and interviews with people who recall these days, the story of Ghana forms a major part of the film. The struggles in Kenya, Algeria, the tragedy of the Belgian Congo and the attempts by Kenyatta and Nyerere for African unity are charted. While much of Africa graduated to independence relatively peacefully, the Portuguese colonies in particular had to opt for armed conflict. Looks at the situation in Guinea Bissau where Amilcar Cabral proved to be an outstanding leader. In Mozambique Davidson talks to Samora Machel, the military leader in Frelimo’s long battle for independence. Focuses on Zimbabwe and the final collapse of the white minority rule and then turns to South Africa to question how long it will be before this final bastion of white rule falls.
