Right to die?, A: The Dax Cowart Case
- Synopsis
- A supported and guided ethical case study of Dax Cowart, who as a young man was seriously injured in a bizarre car accident. Faced with the prospect of a very long and painful recovery, he asks that treatment be discontinued and he be allowed to die. The programme explores the issues raised by his request, using video clips that allow the user to see and hear from Dax Cowart himself as well as from his doctors, nurses and family. The user is led logically through all aspects of the case, asked for decisions about Dax’s future at various stages, and asked to justify them. An archive section provides reference materials including a thematic summary of surrounding issues and a comparative survey of Dax’s and other famous ‘right to die’ cases. The case illustrates the dilemmas of those involved in cases concerning an individual’s right to die.
