Rhythmic Growth in the Oak

Synopsis
When cultivated in a uniform environment the oak shows an alteration of periods of growth and apparent rest. The rest period is actually a time of intense organogenesis. During the growth period only elongation of the internodes and expansion of the leaf blades takes place. This alteration arises from an incompatibility between the two forms of activity, probably controlled by some regulatory mechanism.
