Respiratory Pharmacology

Synopsis
An interactive computer program for teaching the fundamental pharmacology of the airways, based on pulmonary function data obtained from guinea pig. Introductory material describes the pharmacology and nervous control of the airways and the apparatus used to monitor airway function. Various experiments allow the user to demonstrate a range of spasmogens on the preparation (e.g. histamine, 5-HT, acetylcholine, bradykinin, LTC4 and Substance P). The actions of bronchodilators (isoprenaline and mepyramine) are demonstrated in animals given bombesin. The effects of spasmogens in albumin-sensitised animals is also shown. The simulated responses (pulmonary resistance, pulmonary compliance, blood pressure) are derived from actual experimental data.
