Synopsis
An illustrated lecture by Professor Stuart Hall of the Open University on the on the concept of representation, explaining many of the central ideas in cultural studies, including the centrality of culture and meaning in human society, the role of language and communication in meaning, and the relationship between reality and discourse. He further discusses sthe process of signification; meaning and absence; identity identification and power; ideology in relation to meaning; contesting media stereotypes.
