Rendille, The

Synopsis
Some 15,000 Rendille live in settlements and camps dotted in a 10,000-square mile expanse of desert and scrub bush in northern Kenya. Camels are the source of their subsistence and focus of their culture. The film centres on the constraints that dependence on camel herding imposes, in an area in which no crops will grow, and on Rendille organisational and cultural responses to those constraints. The elders, women and children live in settlements and comparative comfort, while the young men for most of the year, rough it in camps. Shows the ways in which the routines of everyday life and the complementary divisions of labour between the sexes and the generations give ordered form to Rendille life. *RAI
