Remote Control
- Synopsis
- Discusses the purpose of television in our society and argues that we are both citizens and consumers. Broadcast while ‘The Broadcasting Act, 1990’ was still going through Parliament, the programme examines the significance of television and its utility in relation to the meaning given to it by the Act, which defines television as a market commodity, its value judged by how many people want to buy and consume its wares. This definition is a fundamental challenge to the concept of public service broadcasting prevailing until now and which has given equal weight to the duty to inform and educate as to the wish to entertain. The programme also argues that as TV’s audience, we are both citizens and consumers. Contributors include Stuart Hall, Maggie Steed, Brian Goombridge and Tom O’Malley.
