Religion and Ethics (2 Parts)
- Synopsis
- Recordings of the Royal Institute of Philosophy’s ‘Christmas Discussions’ at the University of Warwick. The recordings are in four pairs. The first of each pair is a talk by an eminent philosopher, the second a discussion with sixth formers and their teachers.
Part 1: Religious considerations can only provide objective criteria for grounding moral judgements if it is in principle possible for secular ones to do so too. The argument proceeds through the drawing of distinctions.
Part 2: The criteria necessary for recognising an ideal of moral or aesthetic perfection as authoritative may not be the same as those required for constructing it. So it is logically possible for religion to supplement ethics. - Language
